In our opinion this is commercial corporate grade protection in a stand-alone form making it the ideal choice for both private individuals and small entities who may not even have their own network but consist of disparate collaborating individuals. Despite its "Home" name I call it commercial grade because of the real time threat intelligence sourced from every license holder, including corporate usage, and utilised across the entire customer base. Accordingly, we registered as a Sophos affiliate to be able to sell it, in 2018!

This is the facility to package up your sensitive data securely such as in case you lose your laptop, buy a new one and want to transfer your data across, or send it away for repair.
Because you create a fixed sized container this is either a positive (nobody knows how much is in it) or negative (it takes up as much space with nothing in as when full).
You can create multiple containers (with same or different passwords), so different work in each, which are then lighter to move around if wish so to do. Even put on a memory stick!
My favourite here is Truecrypt (last version with "create" capability; 3.4MB)
Unfortunately it stopped being developed following a controversy over its style of writing but no technical flaw was ever established. (I think the Americans got upset that they couldn't break into it).
This is a different approach which piggy backs a file store, and where you can see the existence of the files. This is particularly useful for cloud storage, (such as dropbox), you "slide" the files into the folder and they get encrypted before leaving your computer.
My favourite product here was Boxcryptor which seems to basically be a GUI front end to encfs. It is available in various forms, domestic, small business, large business, and works on many platforms including phones.
However, I subsequently tried out Cryptomator which seems to have the same basis but is Open source and free to use. Unlike Boxcryptor the keys are solely with you. You can easily change the password (right click selected vault) which is very useful for shared (cloud) repositories when members leave the group.
A great free product, including for commercial use, is FreeFileSync which basically does what the name says. Gives option to mirror A to B, mirror B to A, or both ways with a wide range of options to customise if required. Can be used in conjunction with the encryption mechanisms noted above.
There are times when you need to transfer files between computers, such as upload web pages to your website. This should be done in a secure manner but unlike a "File sync" you may only wish to manually transfer individual selected files. There are 2 products which I appreciate...
As the name implies this is a "Windows" "Secure" "CoPy". Has a pleasant GUI, is easy to use, and is simply a good product. The only catch is being limited to Windows systems.
This has a very similar GUI to winscp but feels to me a little more clumpy. Its big advantage is that it is multi-platorm, it also has a server version.
